Even before the pandemic, over 75% of people with mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries were unable to access mental health services. As the pandemic vividly shows, the interplay of mis and disinformation in the media, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation/gender identity, security and the assurance of human rights determines who is likely to suffer a disproportionate impact on physical and mental wellbeing. The stigma and discrimination against people who experience mental ill health additionally affects their opportunities to access education, their livelihoods and their families and loved ones.

Join us as we discuss the ways that journalists can better report on mental health in the current social and economic environment.

Speakers include Sarah Kline, CEO, United for Global Mental Health, who ill speak on mental health in an unequal world. Dr Shekhar Seshadri from the National Institute for Mental Health Sciences (India) who will speak on mental health services for children and adolescents, as well as Judy Kihumba, a journalist, service user and Founder of Talking Hands Listening Eyes (Kenya) to speak on mental health services for pregnant women with disabilities. The discussion with be moderated by Internews Pandemic Mentor Dr Jaya Shreedhar.
