Award-winning data journalism company Media Hack Collective, publisher of The Outlier, is offering a data masterclass course for journalists in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The course is designed for beginners who want to enhance their reporting with data and visualisations. Successful applicants will learn the fundamentals of how to use data in their journalism through a series of masterclasses in a virtual programme designed to up skill media practitioners in turning data into stories.
The 5 week-long, part-time course is designed for working journalists. It starts on 12 October 2021 and will provide both training and continued support and mentorship for participants. Classes will be split over the period and each class will be no more than 1.5 hours in length. There is no cost for participating in the course. A limited number of fellowships are available. The goal is for participants to not only learn, but also apply their new knowledge by producing a data-driven story on a health or development-related topic at the end of the course.

Eligibility criteria
●Language: You must be fluent in English.
●Experience level: Your experience with data journalism is at a beginner level.
●Equipment: You must have access to a laptop or computerwith good internetconnectivity to be able to participate in online classes. Smartphones and tablets will not be suitable for the classes.
●Commitments: You must commit to attending all online classes and completing all assignments.
● You must commit to publish/broadcast at least one data-driven story on a health or development topic on a public platform at the end of the course.
●You must submit a letter of support from your newsroom editor if you are a full-time journalist or a freelancer.
