The Internews Health Journalism Network is excited to offer 4 Gender Justice x Health Fellowships. This exciting and unique fellowship includes a stipend of $750 USD to support story production, rigorous mentorship, exclusive training sessions with internal and external experts, networking opportunities, and a mock newsroom session to workshop final story ideas.
We are seeking insightful and compelling story pitches that explore the implications of pushback against gender equality and women’s and LGBTQI+ rights globally and its profound effects on the health and well-being of all individuals, including men, women, gender-diverse individuals, and children.
We invite journalists, photographers, podcasters and other information creators to pitch stories that shed light on this critical issue.
Stories should include interviews with experts, affected individuals, and relevant stakeholders, and use reliable data and evidence to support the reporting. Strong pitches should seek to utilize reliable available data or highlight the data gaps, voices from community leaders and members, healthcare providers, and policy experts, aiming for at least 50% of experts interviewed to be women and gender-diverse individuals.
Stories may be in any format including print, digital and broadcast media, and photo stories. Stories may be published in any language, but a clear English translation must be provided.
Examples of stories may include (but are not limited to):
- Stories examining the impacts of policy and/or rhetoric related to gender, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), sexual orientation and related areas on the health and well-being of all individuals with a strong intersectional gender lens, including, for example, considerations about disability, ethnicity and socioeconomic status, migration status or other contextually relevant social and cultural aspects.
- Stories that leverage existing data to demonstrate the impact of public policy on gender rights and health outcomes, including mental health, and how these policies may or may not exacerbate social inequality.
- Stories that strongly reflect community voices, local expertise and experiences.
- Stories of community-based resistance and grassroots initiatives.
- Solutions-based stories highlighting a successful or unsuccessful trialed solution focused on addressing the gaps in health resources and information as a result of stringent public policy.
- Stories about how public health organizations, community groups, and activists are responding to restrictive policies on sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender identity and sexual orientation.
- Examples of initiatives and programs aimed at mitigating negative health outcomes.
- Analyses of public health campaigns and their effectiveness in promoting gender-inclusive healthcare.
- Stories examining the impacts of common law/traditional legal practices related to gender on health outcomes in rural/indigenous communities.
