Political decisions can have a major impact on our health. This is especially true in Iraq, where the population suffers from a variety of health conditions. In preparation for the upcoming Iraqi elections scheduled for October 10, we held a one-hour session on September 30 with independent Iraqi writer and journalist Khaled Sulaiman on the topic of How the political agenda impacts our health. The session, organized by HJN Ambassador Farah Adnan, targeted journalists in Iraq and the Kurdistan region, as well as anyone interested in covering Iraq.

For more than 20 years Sulaiman has covered news related to Iraq, with a particular emphasis on the environment, climate change, and health. In his recently published book, “The Birth of Disease. Global Warming and the Spread of Epidemics,” he addresses to the topic of how politics impacts our health.

Sulaiman encouraged journalists who attended the event, to ask political candidates questions about their health agenda and how it might impact their constituents. He also emphasized that reporters must put pressure on their heads of blocs and parties to make people’s health concerns a priority in their political agenda. How do you put pressure? By knowing what the conecrns on the ground are and asking the tough questions.

Suleiman also urged journalists to address mental health and the concept of One Health in their reporting. “Reporters must cover diseases resulting from environmental pollution, gas combustion, oil policy, unsafe water, food safety, and sanitation among many others, while focusing on solutions journalism.” These are initiatives launched by ordinary citizens that offer solutions to promote our health.

The goal, he said, is to cover health stories in an unconventional way to attract the attention of decision-makers and candidates in the upcoming Iraqi elections. Lastly, Sulaiman warned reporters of false information or “Fake News.” This ismore of a political problem, rather than a health one.
